Members of the Reserve forces occupy a time-honored place in the American military tradition. They are unique because they typically straddle both civilian status and military service. In many cases members of the Reserve components serve for prolonged periods of time in capacities that do not allow them to receive traditional military awards or recognition. For this reason the Reserve forces have gradually instituted a series of service awards that recognize the special nature of their contributions.
